KARACHI: The match referee on day three of the Karachi Test between Pakistan and New Zealand stopped Mohammad Rizwan from leading the team in the absence of skipper Babar Azam.
According to details, wicketkeeper Rizwan, who is not a part of the playing eleven, started performing the duties of team captain after Babar Azam did not come to play due to a flu. At the beginning of the match, he called the players and explained their fielding positions to them. When the match referee saw this on the TV screen, he immediately intervened and stopped Rizwan from captaincy.
ICC’s say against substitutes leading the team
Mohammad Rizwan was informed that according to ICC rules, substitute players could not lead the team.
After the intervention of the match referee and umpires, the team management of Pakistan stopped Rizwan from captaincy. Subsequently, Sarfraz Ahmed assumed the duties of the team captain.
