ISLAMABAD: A two-day preparatory session for the upcoming UN Peacekeeping Ministerial on “Safety and Security of UN Peacekeepers” will be held here tomorrow (Wednesday).

Pakistan is hosting this international event while Japan will be co-hosting the meet.

Pakistan’s foreign minister and defence minister will deliver keynote addresses at the preparatory meeting.

Member states represented in the UN Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations, which includes 156 countries, will attend, along with local and international experts.

During the two-day meeting, panel discussions will be held on various sub-themes to discuss the capacity building, safety and security needs of UN peacekeeping forces.

The meeting will also include an expert lecture on the threats posed by improvised explosive devices and a briefing on the pledge system.

It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan is an active player in the field of UN peacekeeping operations both at political and operational level.

Pakistan is among the largest troop contributors and since 1960 has contributed more than 230,000 peacekeeping men and women to 46 UN peacekeeping missions on almost every continent of the world. One hundred and seventy two Pakistani peacekeepers made the ultimate sacrifice by laying down their lives in the line of duty.

Pakistan hosting the preparatory meeting signifies its continued commitment to UN peacekeeping aimed at maintaining security and stability in various conflict zones.
