KARACHI: Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Chairman Noor Alam Khan has directed the maritime affairs secretary to recover eight salaries given to officers and employees of the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) under the head of bonuses in the last 10 years.
The director-general audit told the PAC meeting that the KPT has been facing loss for the last few years, but 4,000 officers and employees of the trust have been given bonuses of four salaries on Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Azha every year.
According to the director-general audit, from 2011 to 2020, a total of Rs6.23 billion was given to the officers and employees of KPT in addition to salary and allowances as bonuses, and employees were given a bonus of Rs1.02 billion in 2019 and 2020, while the financial loss of the trust this year was Rs38 million.
The committee was told that the trust has 4,000 employees, while the employees and officers have the lowest salary of Rs 80,000 and a maximum of Rs3 00,000.
The PAC chairman said, “we are a poor country, begging from the IMF and the World Bank. The officers’ performance here is zero, but they take eight salaries as a yearly bonus. The committee has also been told that the name of the minister, adviser, or secretary who ordered this bonus should be made public.”
