Throughout history, the pursuit of immigration in search of better opportunities has been a relentless quest. Yet, the recent tragic incident near the shores of Greece serves as a chilling reminder of the dangers faced by those who dared to dream of a brighter future in Europe. These individuals, driven by hope, became victims of human smugglers whose insatiable greed led them to overload vessels, disregarding the safety and lives of their desperate passengers.
While unfortunate incidents like this have occurred in the past, it remains unsettling that innocent people continue to fall prey to such deceitful traps. In a world where many ships pass through successfully, it is the few catastrophic failures that remind us of the unimaginable horrors endured by those seeking a better life.
Another among the most poignant examples is the haunting tale of the “Camel Kids” shipment during the 1990s, showcasing the heart-wrenching reality of parents who, out of sheer desperation or indifference, willingly subject their innocent children to unimaginable hardships.
In the wake of the tragic shipwreck, it is imperative to acknowledge that we are all responsible for this catastrophic loss of life- even Angels of Death must be baffled by the depths of human desire-lives cut short, untimely, and unscheduled, deviating from the celestial plan.
Nevertheless, in the terrestrial domain the burden lies particularly heavy on those entrusted to combat such heinous crimes. Regrettably, our efforts have fallen short, and we remain obstinately ignorant. The consequences of our wayward existence loom ominously, promising even greater devastation. Will we heed this warning or continue our perilous path?
In our current state, as values crumble and the educated elite neglect ethical standards, we cannot expect the unemployed and impoverished to conform to societal norms. The tragic shipwreck, claiming Pakistani lives, epitomizes the wreckage of a nation consumed by bad governance and chaos. Regrettably, such calamities are soon forgotten, allowing the perpetuation of business as usual.
During my time in the FIA in 2005, I witnessed a concerning reality: immigration officers faced administrative issues and low pay yet showed little interest in taking breaks or going home for obvious reasons. However, when developed countries issued an ultimatum, threatening to categorize our nation unfavorably, the government was forced to act. This spurred our government into recognizing the importance of revitalizing the border control system.
While engaging in illegal means of travel, there existed tacit support from certain segments of the community. Their argument was that these migrants would contribute to the country’s economy through remittances. Shockingly, even in cases of deportation or tragic deaths, they vehemently opposed acting against the criminal networks. Those who dared to stand against this system met their downfall, much like a solitary tree in a storm, facing relentless opposition and ultimately succumbing to its force.
In Karachi, there was a notorious Deputy Director who orchestrated a devious plan to facilitate trafficking. He would fill entire airplane with illegal travelers, giving the appearance of diligence by apprehending a handful of individuals out of the two hundred passengers. This charade earned him praise for his supposed professionalism, while most passengers safely reached their destinations and his vault continued to swell quietly.
This monthly operation continued with the support of influential officials and elites who indulged in lavish feasts with him. Such was his power that even after retiring, he received offers to enter the political realm. It was a tale of intrigue and corruption, where the lines between law enforcement and criminal networks blur, and those in power dance hand in hand with deceit.
Despite the application of the Integrated Border Management System (IBMS) in the FIA, which aimed to seal off illegal border crossings at formal exit points, the dark underbelly of human trafficking persists through the cracks of porous borders and treacherous seashores. This nefarious industry stretches its greedy tentacles worldwide, evading even the most sophisticated efforts of advanced nations to curb its operations. It thrives in the shadows, preying on the vulnerable and exploiting their dreams of a better life. The battle against human trafficking is a gripping tale of a relentless pursuit for justice, as law enforcement agencies and advocates fight against a faceless enemy that thrives in the shadows.
In a fight against human trafficking, ill-equipped border guards face a formidable adversary. Their meager resources and outdated tools leave them at a disadvantage. On top of it those who challenge the trafficking network face swift retaliation from powerful figures involved. The soul of humanity demands collective action and a united front.
In the face of recent tragedy, we must rise and forge a path to combat this chilling crime. It is a call for unity, with the government, civil society, and religious leaders joining forces to condemn shortcuts and embrace a better way. In the grand theater of possibilities, let us orchestrate a symphony of change, forge a system where our skilled workforce becomes a coveted treasure across the globe. No longer allow sacrifice our youth to menial jobs, but instead, empowering them with the mastery of esteemed trades.
Historically, Pakistanis have held their ground in prestigious professions like medicine and education. Our nation brims with untapped potential, awaiting proper utilization. Charity needs to be redefined from mere handouts to cutting-edge technical institutions by government, philanthropists, and business. Beggars can become valued contributors on this transformative journey.
To unlock Pakistan’s true potential, we must create avenues for economic and professional growth. Individuals should embark on their journeys in the “Right Way of Doing Things.” Starting with a small business in their own country can be a launching pad for success. It’s essential to recognize that the challenges faced abroad may not align with idyllic visions. Believing in oneself and seeking guidance from elders fosters a positive approach. If the desire to go abroad persists, it must be pursued through legal and ethical means.
Tailpiece: Amidst sorrow’s grip, we mustn’t forget others have died tragically too-20000 lives lost in traffic accidents, 10,000 victims of murder, and 543 souls shattered by gang rape in 2022- their deaths may not be our fault, but they had loved ones among us too.
