Over 30,000 Flee to Syria Amid Israel’s War on Lebanon: UN

BERLIN: The UN refugee agency reported on Friday that over 30,000 people, primarily Syrians, have crossed into Syria from Lebanon in the last 72 hours amid escalating conflict between Israeli forces and Hezbollah, which has left hundreds of people dead in Lebanon.

According to Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, the UNHCR representative in Syria, around 80 percent of those crossing are Syrians and about 20 percent are Lebanese.

Notably, half of the individuals crossing are children and adolescents, while men are crossing in smaller numbers than women.

Vargas Llosa emphasized the difficult decision these individuals face, moving from a war-torn country to one that has endured a prolonged crisis for 13 years. “We will have to see over the next few days how many more make the crossing” said he.

It is pertinent to mention here that nearly 700 people have been killed in Lebanon this week alone as Israel dramatically escalated strikes.
