KUALA LAMPUR: At least 2,294 persons have been evacuated as continuous heavy rains triggered widespread flooding in the east coast state of Terengganu, with an additional 39 displaced in the west coast state of Perak of Malaysia, as reported by authorities on Tuesday. The flooding has prompted the activation of 19 flood relief centers to provide shelter for those affected, according to the country’s social welfare department.
The meteorological department issued warnings of persistent heavy rains attributed to the northeast monsoon, a seasonal weather pattern prevailing from October to March. Residents in the northern states and the country’s east coast have been advised to brace for strong winds and rough seas as the monsoon continues its course.
