GENEVA: Over 100,000 people have crossed into Syria from Lebanon since a war between Israeli troops and the Hezbollah group escalated this month, the UN refugee agency head said on Monday.
Filippo Grandi said in a statement via social media that those fleeing included both Syrian and Lebanese nationals. He said that the UN agency is supporting those arriving at least four crossing points.
Earlier, on Monday, Hamas has confirmed that Fatah Sharif Abu al-Amine, the group’s leader in Lebanon, was killed in an air strike targeting his house in the Al-Bass Palestinian refugee camp near Tyre, southern Lebanon. The attack also claimed the lives of his wife, son, and daughter. The group condemned the killing as a “terrorist and criminal assassination.”
Earlier, Lebanon’s health ministry said that Israeli attacks in eastern Lebanon have killed around 21 people and left 47 others injured on Sunday. The Israeli attacks targeted the Baalbek-Hemel area, which has been subjected to a series of heavy assaults over the past week.
Eyewitnesses also confirmed the intensity of the air raids, noting that Israeli military offensives have continued to escalate.
