Outrage as Greece Confesses ‘Failures’ Following Deadly Train Accident

ATHENS: Fury mounted in Greece on Thursday over a deadly train crash that killed as many as 57 people, with protest demonstrations and a countrywide strike as officials admitted failures overseeing the rail system.

Outrage as Greece Confesses ‘Failures

Around 700 protestors massed outside the Athens headquarters of rail operator Hellenic Train to voice outrage and grief over the deadly accident.

A protest demonstrator, Stavros Nantis said that they are angry towards the government and company that did not work for the improvement of Greek railway.

Announcing a shutdown, the rail union federation condemned a “lack of respect towards rail network by governments, which led to this tragic accident.”

On the other hand, the Government spokesperson Yiannis Economou said that an investigation would be conducted to examine the overall situation in the rail network.  The spokesperson added that the responsibility, the error, and the negligence had been admitted by the station master.

Greece’s minister for transport resigned Wednesday after the tragic accident in the country.

US President Joe Biden expressed condolences on Thursday over the “tragic train accident”, saying that they wish the injured a quick recovery.
