NEW YORK, USA: The euthanization of Peanut, an internet-famous squirrel, by New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has ignited public anger.

Peanut and a raccoon named Fred, both cherished animals at Mark Longo’s animal sanctuary, were taken from Longo’s home by DEC officers due to alleged violations regarding wildlife housing and potential rabies risks.

According to American media, The seizure was part of an unannounced visit involving six officers, who later informed the media before notifying Longo directly. Longo shared his heartbreak online, describing Peanut and Fred as beloved members of his sanctuary and condemning what he saw as a lack of empathy from the DEC.

Peanut’s passing sparked a flood of condolences and criticism on social media, with even Elon Musk commenting that the government should not interfere with people’s relationships with their animals. The DEC, however, defended its decision, citing public health regulations that prevent the private keeping of certain wildlife species.

In response to the loss, Longo has announced a fundraiser in Peanut’s memory and remains dedicated to his sanctuary’s mission, vowing to continue despite this painful setback.
