ISLAMABAD: Joining a loud chorus of criticism against the new right-wing government, the outgoing Israeli army chief on Friday issued a warning against controversial plans by Benjamin Netanyahu’s new ultranationalist coalition. The plans, which have attracted intense criticism include granting more control to lawmakers who support the settler lawmakers and making other changes to the Israeli security establishment.
Just days before days he steps down, Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi while speaking in a number of interviews with Israeli news outlets, took an unusually sharp aim at the coalition agreements with extremist Jewish settler activists who seek to restructure the Defense Ministry, entrench Israeli rule in the occupied West Bank, and control a special paramilitasry police unit.
Israeli army chief worries preparedness for war to be damaged
Kochavi stated the plans would “adversely affect” Israeli preparedness for war. Kochavi’s concerns have deep significance as Jewish Israelis consider the military an emblem of stability and one of the most trusted institutions in Israel.
