ISLAMABAD: Having passed exams, written news articles, and produced code, the AI programme ChatGPT has once again surprised everyone by writing a storyline for the record-breaking manga “One Piece.”

Eiichiro Oda, author of the famous manga and often referred to as among the best in the world, seemed to have found himself caught up in writer’s block last month.

“Hello, friend. This is the author. I cannot produce a story for One Piece next week. Would you think of a story? A super good one, please,” he said to the programme, according to a video posted by his staff on their Twitter account. Within seconds, the bot spun a story in which heroes come across new friends and battle it out with new foes, including “Shadow King.”

The programme attempted selling the story to Oda, telling him that the proposed plot includes a mysterial tribe, and new comrades and offers a renewed focus on one of the existing characters to showcase her intellect and behaviours that the readers would find very enjoyable.

ChatGPT breaking records

But Oda’s immediate response to the story was unreticent: “Sorry. It’s boring,” he typed, asking for a better idea.

The second time around, the bot was rewarded for producing a remarkable storyline in which an alien joins hands with “One Piece” characters and Luffy, the “pirate king,” to fight a witch and rebuild its home star that was destroyed by an evil spaceship.

“Thank you. I will draw as it is,” Oda wrote in response to the second story, quipping that he will incorporate the new storyline in his next installation in the saga.

The record-breaking manga

The Japanese manga series “One Piece” follows straw hat-wearing Luffy and his team as they search for the titular treasure coveted by all pirates. The last installment began on July 25 in the Japanese weekly manga magazine Shonen Jump.

The series has racked up over 100 volumes and smashed sales records since its first installment in 1997.

Oda also received a Guinness World Record for having the most copies published for a single comic book series by an author.
