ISLAMABAD/DUBAI: Authorities said that a man armed with a Kalashnikov-style rifle attacked the Azerbaijan embassy in Tehran on Friday, killing the head of security at the diplomatic post and injuring two guards.

Attack on embassy

No one immediately offered the motive for the Tehran embassy attack. A video purportedly taken at the scene showed a lifeless body inside the embassy past the metal detector.

Local state media did not immediately acknowledge the attack on an embassy.

Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry said, “an investigation is currently underway into this treacherous attack.” It described the attacker as destroying a security guard post with assault rifle fire.

Azerbaijan borders Iran to its northwest. There has been a tussle between the two countries as Armenia and Azerbaijan have fought over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

In October, Iran launched an army exercise near the Azerbaijan border, flexing its martial might amid nationwide protests rocking the Islamic Republic. Azerbaijan maintains close relations with Israel, which Iran views as one of its top regional enemies.
