IOWA, United States: What began as a family birthday coincidence has turned into a Guinness World Records achievement, after five generations of an American family were born on the same date, September 14.

Fred Harlow and four generations of his family now hold the record for the most generations born on the same date, with Harlow, his grandfather Wilber, his mother Addie, his daughter Emma Bell and his grandson Arthur all sharing the unusual birthday.

A birthday tradition that spans five generations

Harlow said his family had always considered the shared birthday an interesting coincidence, but he never imagined it would eventually earn them a place in the Guinness World Records.

“Children are a gift,” Harlow said, adding that he had never given much thought to becoming a record holder and believed that things happened for a reason.

The family sought official recognition after Emma Bell gave birth to her son Arthur. They had previously discovered that four generations sharing the same birthday could potentially qualify for a record.

Arthur’s arrival on September 14, 2025, however, pushed the family beyond that mark and established the five-generation record.

Grandmother’s prediction comes true

Emma Bell said her grandmother had repeatedly predicted that she would one day have a son born on September 14.

According to Emma, her grandmother would mention the possibility every year. Her first child was born early, so when she became pregnant again, Emma decided to retain September 14 as her due date.

Arthur ultimately arrived exactly on his due date, completing the remarkable five-generation chain.

Emma said her grandmother would have been extremely happy and proud of the family’s achievement, adding that she believed the milestone would have deeply moved her.

A boy-girl-boy-girl-boy pattern

The family’s shared birthday is not their only unusual coincidence.

Beginning with grandfather Wilber, the five generations also form a distinctive boy-girl-boy-girl-boy pattern.

With five generations now celebrating their birthdays together every September 14, the Iowa family has turned an extraordinary family coincidence into a Guinness World Records milestone.
