Stocks and oil prices internationally sank on Monday as China pressed with the zero-Covid policy as protests erupted across the country against the curbs.

In various major cities across China, thousands of people took to the streets on Sunday after a deadly fire in the Xinjiang region on Thursday, which further fuelled public anger.

Protesters took to the streets in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu, demanding an end to curbs abd lock downs.

China-linked stocks bore the brunt of selling, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index down more than 3 per cent and Shanghai off more than 1 per cent. The yuan fell more than 1 per cent.

Stock markets in Tokyo, Sydney, Seoul, Singapore, Taipei and Wellington also faced losses.

The prospect of low demand in China hammered oil prices, with both main contracts down more than 2 per cent. AFP/APP
