JEDDAH: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has welcomed the United Nations General Assembly’s support for the Palestinian bid to become a full UN member, recognizing it as qualified to join and recommending the UN Security Council “reconsider the matter positively.”
The OIC statement read that it believes that this resolution reflects international consensus in supporting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. These rights include self-determination, freedom, justice, and independence, and emphasize the imperative to end the Israeli colonial occupation of Palestinian territory since 1967.
Emphasizing its full support, the OIC stands firmly behind Palestine’s legitimate right to attain its political and legal status at the United Nations, like other nations of the world. This entitlement is viewed as longstanding and enforceable, rooted in the political, legal, historical, and natural rights of the Palestinian people, as endorsed by relevant United Nations resolutions. Moreover, Palestine enjoys recognition from 144 countries and as well as its full membership in numerous international organizations and conventions.
The Secretary-General of the OIC, Hissein Brahim Taha, appreciated the countries that backed the UN General Assembly’s draft resolution.
He urged the Security Council to positively reconsider Palestine’s request for full UN membership. Taha called upon nations that have yet to recognize the State of Palestine to do so, stressing the importance of supporting efforts to end the Israeli colonial occupation and address the grave challenges faced by the Palestinian people, including the crime of genocide.
He underscored the need to enable Palestinians to exercise their legitimate rights, including the right to return, self-determination, and the establishment of their state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital, based on the 1967 borders and in alignment with relevant UN resolutions and the Arab Peace initiative, to achieve a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace in the region.
