JEDDAH: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Tuesday welcomed the United Nations Security Council’s resolution calling for an immediate and complete ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
The ceasefire resolution that backs the United States peace plan in the regions, called for the withdrawal of Israeli occupying forces, the repatriation of displaced Palestinians to their homes, and ensuring safe and sufficient humanitarian access throughout the Gaza Strip.
The resolution also opposes any attempts to alter the Gaza Strip’s demographic or territorial change.
The OIC, in its statement, hailed the resolution as a pivotal stride towards the international community taking accountability for stopping the eight-month-long Israeli atrocities against Palestinians in Gaza.
The OIC urged collective action and accountability from all parties to promptly enforce the Security Council resolution provisions.
According to the Palestinian’s health ministry, at least 37,164 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in the Gaza Strip during more than eight months of Israeli ground and air offensive.
According to the health ministry statement, as many as 40 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli attacks in the past 24 hours.
Responding to the UN’s Security Council’s resolution, a senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri said that the Palestinian movement accepts the ceasefire plan and is ready to negotiate over the details, adding that it was up to Washington to ensure that Israel abides by the resolution, Reuters reported.
Sami Abu Zuhri, the official spokesperson, said that Hamas is ready to discuss the details of the ceasefire resolution, which entails the withdrawal of Israeli troops and the exchange of hostages for detainees held by Israel. He emphasized the importance of Washington’s role in ensuring Israel’s compliance with the resolution.
The world leaders at the Jorden Summit-an emergency international conference on Gaza’s humanitarian crisis- also backed the US proposed Gaza Ceasefire Security Council resolution and urged for greater aid access into the war-ravaged Palestinian territory and backed a US-proposed Gaza ceasefire plan as the only long-term solution.
