JEDDAH: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Wednesday welcomed the decision of Slovenia to recognize the State of Palestine.

The OIC in a statement said that this important and historic move advances the achievement of justice and freedom for the people of Palestine and affirms their legitimate rights, including self-determination.

It said that the OIC valued such stances, which are consistent with the rules of international law and relevant resolutions of the United Nations and strengthen global efforts aimed at ending the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including Jerusalem.

The OIC renewed its call on the global states which have not yet recognized the State of Palestine to take the initiative and support the State of Palestine’s request for full membership in the UN, within the framework of supporting international efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region according to the vision of the two-state solution and based on the relevant international legitimacy resolutions and the Arabic peace initiative.

In a major development the parliament of Slovenia on Tuesday passed a decree recognizing a Palestinian state.

Fifty-two members of the 90-member parliament voted in favour of the government-sponsored resolution to recognize a Palestinian state.
