JEDDAH: On the sixth anniversary of the genocide against Rohingya Muslims and their subsequent displacement from Myanmar’s Rakhine State, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has called upon the international community to intensify efforts to facilitate the voluntary, safe, dignified, and sustainable return of Rohingya refugees to their homeland.

The OIC’s statement underlines the urgency of addressing the plight of these displaced individuals and emphasizes the need for renewed commitment to justice and accountability.

The tragic events that transpired on August 25, 2017, led to the mass displacement of Rohingya Muslims and other communities from Myanmar, with many seeking refuge in neighboring Bangladesh.

OIC stated in a statement that the organization stands in solidarity with the victims and survivors of this grave human tragedy, reiterating its unwavering commitment to pursuing justice and accountability for the atrocities perpetrated by the Myanmar military. Notably, the organization is advocating for accountability of the Myanmar military at the International Court of Justice.

OIC Appreciates Bangladesh and Other Member States

The OIC expresses profound gratitude to the Government and people of Bangladesh for their role in providing shelter and humanitarian relief to Rohingya refugees, whose lives have been disrupted by violence and displacement. OIC also acknowledged and appreciated the support extended by its various member states towards Rohingya refugees.

Highlighting its steadfast commitment to supporting Rohingya Muslims, the OIC General Secretariat underscores the crucial need for global collaboration in creating the necessary conditions for their secure and sustainable return to Myanmar. This includes ensuring that the return is voluntary, dignified, and aligned with international human rights standards.

In addition, the OIC draws attention to the challenging circumstances faced by displaced Rohingya individuals in refugee camps, particularly regarding humanitarian aid. Funding for essential assistance has seen a considerable decline, resulting in reductions in vital services such as food aid. To address this critical issue, the OIC calls upon the international community to enhance its efforts in delivering urgently needed humanitarian assistance to the displaced Rohingya population.
