JEDDAH: Organization of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) General Secretariat has recognized Azerbaijan’s legitimate step and decision to establish a border checkpoint in its territory in response to security dangers and in line with norms and principles of international law.
The OIC General Secretariat referred to the Trilateral Statement inked between Azerbaijan, the Russian Federation, and Armenia on 10 November 2020, which announced the ending of all military activities.
The General Secretariat, in the spirit of the Trilateral Statement, urged Armenia to respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Azerbaijan, it said in a statement on Thursday.
As per the Trilateral Agreement, Azerbaijan guarantees the security of the movement of people, vehicles, and cargo through the Lachin-Khankandi road.
Why OIC recognizes Azerbaijan’s decision?
The OIC General Secretariat recognized that ensuring border security was a prerogative of the Azerbaijan government and an important condition for state sovereignty, national security, and the rule of law.
The Secretariat underlined the call by the Council of Foreign Ministers of OIC at its 49th session, organized in Nouakchott, Mauritania, and at previous sessions, for the normalization of ties between Armenia and Azerbaijan based on mutual recognition of and respect for each other’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and internationally recognized borders.
