JEDDAH: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) convened an intergovernmental expert group meeting on Tuesday at its headquarters in Jeddah to discuss the establishment of an OIC platform aimed at safeguarding and preserving cultural heritage across the Islamic world.
The OIC has consistently supported global efforts and initiatives in protecting cultural and natural heritage, particularly in emergency situations. The organization remains committed to enhancing action on this crucial issue and contributing to international endeavors.
In his opening statement delivered on behalf of OIC Secretary-General Mr. Hissein Brahim Taha, the OIC Ambassador Tariq Ali Bakhit, the Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian, Cultural, and Social Affairs emphasized that cultural heritage is a testament to the diverse and rich cultural backgrounds within the OIC geographical space. It plays a significant role in preserving collective memory and ensuring the historical and civilizational continuity of nations and their peoples.
The expert group meeting sought to follow up on the implementation of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers’ resolutions, particularly Resolution No. 10/49-C, which addresses the protection and preservation of Islamic and world historical and cultural heritage. The resolution was adopted during the forty-ninth session of the Council held earlier this year in Nouakchott, Islamic Republic of Mauritania.

Participants at the meeting included experts from OIC Member States, as well as representatives from relevant OIC organs and institutions. The gathering aimed to formulate a clear vision and engage in discussions on establishing and promoting the proposed platform.
Ambassador Tariq Ali Bakhit expressed optimism that the two-day meeting would generate fruitful discussions about the OIC’s future role in protecting and enhancing cultural heritage in its Member States. The project was described as enormous, promising, and potentially rewarding, underscoring the significance the OIC attaches to the protection of cultural heritage.
The proposed platform for the protection and preservation of cultural heritage within OIC countries serves as a testament to the organization’s commitment to the cultural legacy of its member nations. By establishing this platform, the OIC seeks to strengthen international cooperation in safeguarding cultural heritage and promoting its enduring value for future generations.
