JEDDAH: President H.E. Azali Assoumani of the Union of Comoros hosted a delegation from the General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to observe the scheduled presidential and governors’ elections for the three islands. The invitation extended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Union of Comoros brought together a delegation led by Mr. Namig Huseynov from the Political Department, with Mr. Dramane Traoré, Head of the Registry Department, as a member.
During the meeting, the OIC delegation conveyed the greetings of His Excellency Mr. Hissein Brahim Taha, the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, to President Azali Assoumani. The delegation commended the Comorian government’s efforts in creating favorable conditions for the elections, emphasizing the significance the OIC places on observing elections in its member states, as outlined in the relevant provisions of the OIC Charter.

On January 12, 2024, the OIC election observation mission held a meeting with the head of the Independent National Elections Commission. During the meeting, the commission provided the mission with a comprehensive briefing on the electoral process, underscoring the pivotal role of international election observers in ensuring transparency and credibility.
The OIC delegation actively observed the entire electoral process on January 14, including preparations in the pre-poll period, activities on polling day, and the subsequent vote counting. This engagement reflects the OIC’s commitment to supporting democratic processes and upholding the principles of transparency and fairness in its member states.
