JEDDAH: The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has strongly condemned the extremist settlers’ tearing up and burning of copies of the Holy Qur’an near the Ibrahimi Mosque in the city of Al-Khalil, Hebron.
“This crime [tearing up and burning of copies of the Holy Qur’an] constitutes a provocation to Muslims’ feelings and an assault on their faith, it is a violation of human rights values and principles, and that it would fuel hatred, extremism and violence in the world”, OIC said in a statement on Thursday.
The organization stressed the need to criminalize defamation of religions and sanctities, combat such racist phenomena and other acts of incitement to hatred on the basis of religion or belief, and ensure respect for relevant international instruments and resolutions.
It is to be noted that Israeli settlers on October 10, tore and burned a number of Qurans and threw them in the garbage near the Qaytun Mosque at the Ibrahimi Mosque.
