OSLO: Norwegian defense minister Bjoern Arild Gram said on Wednesday that Norway would support and assist training programs for pilots of Ukraine to fly F-16 jets. The development came as US President Joe Biden also endorsed training programs for Ukraine while Ukrainian President Zelensky also assured President Biden that the aircraft would not be used to go into the territory of Russia.
Norway to Support Training Programs for Ukrainian Pilots
Gram said that the government supports this step and is considering how Norway can support and contribute together with partners and allies. The defense minister separately told the media that the government of Norway has not decided whether Norway will provide any of its F-16 fighters jets to Kyiv.
Russia, whose troops invaded Ukraine fifteen months ago, has said any transfer of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine would be pointless and also raise the question of NATO’s role in the ongoing conflict.
