North Korea’s Leader Inspects Cruise Missile Test as US-South Korea Military Exercises Start

SEOUL: North Korea’s Kim Jong Un has overseen a test of strategic cruise missiles, official media KCNA said on Monday, as the United States and South Korea are set to start annual military exercises which Pyongyang sees as a preparation for war.

Kim Jong Un visited a navy fleet on the east coast to examine the test aboard a war vessel, KCNA reported, without giving more information about his visit. “The ship quickly hit the target without any error,” KCNA said.

According to KCNA, North Korea’s leader visited the ship for maintaining “mighty striking power and continuous readiness for combat to manage with unexpected situations,”.

The latest development came as the United States and South Korea are scheduled to conduct the

Ulchi Freedom Guardian summer military exercises on Monday, devised to enhance further their joint responses to Pyongyang’s evolving missile and nuclear threats.

North Korea has condemned the allies’ military exercise as a preparation for nuclear war, Reuters reported.

South Korea’s army said this year’s military exercises would be conducted on the “largest scale ever,” activating tens of thousands of forces from both countries, as well as some member nations of the UN Command.

South Korean MPs had said that North Korea could seek to fire an intercontinental ballistic missile or take other action to record its protest as the United States and South Korea are set to start annual military exercises.
