SEOUL: In a recent report from state media on Monday, North Korea’s Supreme Leader, Kim Jong Un, expressed his sincere gratitude to President Vladimir Putin as he concluded his defense-focused tour of Russia’s far east. The visit, which began last Tuesday, has raised concerns in the Western world about potential collaboration between the isolated, nuclear-armed Pyongyang and Moscow, especially in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

During his week-long trip, Kim inspected a range of Russian defense assets, including space rockets and submarines. The visit was highlighted by a symbolic exchange of rifles with President Putin. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) announced on Monday that Kim extended his heartfelt appreciation to President Putin and the Russian leadership for their exceptional care and warm hospitality throughout his visit.

As Kim prepares to return to North Korea after successfully completing his official goodwill visit to the Russian Federation, he conveyed his well wishes for prosperity and well-being to the people of Russia, according to the KCNA report. The visit reaffirmed North Korea’s commitment to making bilateral ties with Russia its “number one priority,” as expressed by Kim during a rare summit with Putin.

Historically, North Korea and Russia have maintained close ties despite facing extensive global sanctions—Moscow for its involvement in Ukraine and Pyongyang for its nuclear weapon tests. Kim’s visit underscored North Korea’s intention to strengthen ties with Russia, seeking assistance with satellite technology and modernizing its military equipment. Conversely, Russia is interested in North Korea’s artillery shells for use in the conflict in Ukraine.

The summit between Putin and Kim took place at Russia’s Vostochny cosmodrome, emphasizing the potential for enhanced cooperation and military ties between the two nations. Although no official agreements were announced, Putin emphasized the prospects of greater collaboration.

During his visit, Kim enjoyed a unique display at the Primorsky Aquarium, witnessing a performance by a walrus and other sea animals. This outing was in addition to inspecting various facilities and complimenting the aquarium’s reputation as a leading scientific research base under Putin’s leadership.

KCNA described Kim’s visit as historic, showcasing the strengthening of “militant unity” and a promising “new chapter” in DPRK-Russia relations. The North Korean leader extended an invitation to Putin to visit North Korea, further solidifying diplomatic ties. Additionally, Putin offered to send a Russian national to space, potentially marking a significant milestone in the relationship between the two nations.
