PYONGYANG, North Korea: North Korea is planning to send its Foreign Minister, Choe Son-hui, to the UN General Assembly in late September, marking the first appearance by an incumbent North Korean foreign minister at the event since 2018.

According to Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun, Choe will attend the general debate, where global leaders deliver speeches, and is scheduled to speak on September 28 or 30.

She is expected to defend North Korea’s nuclear activities and criticize the UN Security Council’s sanctions, as well as U.S. military exercises on the Korean Peninsula. This follows a 2018 speech by then-Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho, who emphasized the need for trust-building with the United States for any denuclearization progress.
