SEOUL:  A group of Russian tourists arrived in Pyongyang on Friday marking the first known instance of a foreign tour group visiting nuclear-armed North Korea since the onset of pandemic-related border closures.

Footage and images from AFP depicted the Russian tourists disembarking at Pyongyang airport, exploring the surroundings with smiles on their faces as they snapped photographs. The flight details were visible on the arrivals board.

This development occurs amidst the backdrop of strengthening ties between Moscow and Pyongyang, highlighted by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s rare journey abroad to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Russian Far East last September.

However, South Korea and Washington have raised concerns, alleging that North Korea has dispatched weaponry to Moscow for potential use in Ukraine. Such actions would contravene a series of UN sanctions imposed on both nations — North Korea for its prohibited weapons initiatives and Russia for its involvement in the conflict with Kyiv.

Natalia Zinina, a manager at Vostok Intur tour agency, which orchestrated the excursion, informed NK News, a specialist site based in Seoul, that the tour group’s itinerary spans from February 9 to 12.

The group’s journey entails an initial stop in Pyongyang followed by a visit to the Masikryong Ski Resort near Wonsan on the eastern coast of North Korea. It’s anticipated that a total of 97 Russian nationals will partake in the four-day excursion.
