PYONGYANG: North Korea has vowed to destroy its enemies when leader Kim Jong Un gives an order in case of war, state media KCNA reported on Sunday.

Senior military officials including Navy Lieutenant Commander Yu Kyong Song and Army Colonel Ri Un Ryong made the comments at a meeting attended by Kim to celebrate the 71st Korean War armistice anniversary, according to KCNA.

North Korea and the United States do not have diplomatic relations and talks over reducing tensions and denuclearising North Korea have been paused since 2019. North Korea’s state media recently said it is not expecting a change in the US policy even after the presidential elections.

While accusing South Korea and the US of being hell-bent on provoking a nuclear war, the military officials vowed to take Pyongyang’s war efficiency to a stage that when Supreme Commander Kim Jong Un gives an order they will be able to completely destroy the enemy with an overwhelming attack.

North Korea signed a pact with the United States and China on July 27, 1953, ending hostilities in the three-year war. US generals signed the agreement on behalf of the United Nations forces that supported South Korea.

North Korea declares July 27 as “Victory Day” while South Korea does not mark the day with any major events. Hostilities ended with a ceasefire and not a treaty, which means the two sides are still technically at war.
