ISLAMABAD/SEOUL: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the testing of a new “high-thrust solid-fuel motor” strategic weapon.

The new development could give North Korea a more mobile and difficult-to-detect arsenal of intercontinental ballistic missiles ICBMs that can reach the US mainland.

According to the official Korean Central News Agency, KCNA, Thursday’s motor test that “static fire test” of a missile engine at the nation’s northwest rocket launch facility was the first of its sort in North Korea. A “sure sci-tech assurance for the creation of another new-type strategic weapon system” was offered by the test.

According to KCNA, Kim thanked scientists and technicians for the test and anticipated the new weapon would be constructed “in the shortest amount of time.”

Intercontinental Missile Tests Strategic Assets

North Korea is most likely referring to a solid-fueled intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), one of several cutting-edge weapons systems that Kim promised to unveil at a significant Workers’ Party congress early last year. Kim also pledged to produce a multi-warhead missile, nuclear missiles fired from submarines, and surveillance satellites.

The most recent motor test demonstrated that North Korea would fulfill Kim’s promises to create such advanced missile systems despite domestic hardships brought on by the pandemic and international pressure from the United States to scale back its nuclear program. A variety of nuclear-capable ballistic missiles have been tested by North Korea in recent months, including the Hwasong-17 ICBM, which was launched last month and is the country’s longest-range, liquid-fueled, multiple-warhead ICBM under development.

North Korean Strategic Assets Reaches United States

Short-range, solid-fueled ballistic missiles from North Korea already have an expanding arsenal that are mandated against strategic South Korean targets, including American military installations there.

According to KCNA, the test on Thursday aimed to confirm particular technical aspects of the ICBM motor based on “the thrust vector controlling technology.” The test revealed that all technical indicators supported the motor’s dependability and stability.
