SEOUL: The South Korean military officials said on Saturday that North Korea fired several cruise missiles toward the Yellow Sea.

In a statement, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said that the US and South Korean intelligence officials were analyzing details of the missile launch. Reuters reported that it was the latest in a series of missile tests carried out by North Korea in recent days.

North Korea Fires Several Cruise Missiles

South Korea announced sanctions Friday on five North Korean citizens and one firm in response to North Korea’s launch of what it said was a space rocket in August.

On Thursday, official media KCNA reported that North Korea had carried out a simulated “scorched earth” nuclear strike on targets across South Korea, drawing censure from Seoul.

On the other hand, the joint annual exercises between the US and South Korea known as the Ulchi Freedom Shield concluded Thursday following an 11-day run featuring air exercises with B-1B bombers.

North Korea lodged a protest over the deployment of the US strategic bombers by firing two missiles just hours later in reprisal. South Korea has long condemned the drills as a preparation for war.
