SEOUL: North Korea has expressed its unwavering support for Russia in handling a recent mutiny, as reported by state media on Sunday. During a meeting with Alexander Matsegora, the Russian ambassador to Pyongyang, Im Chon Il, North Korea’s vice foreign minister, conveyed his strong conviction that the armed rebellion in Russia would be effectively quelled, according to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
The security crisis in Russia, regarded as one of the most severe in decades, saw a retreat by heavily armed mercenaries from the Wagner group after advancing near Moscow over the weekend. This development has brought relief to the country.
Im Chon Il further stated, as reported by KCNA, that he firmly believed the resolute Russian army and its people would triumphantly overcome all trials and ordeals in the ongoing special military operation against Ukraine. North Korea has consistently voiced support for Russia since the commencement of the conflict in Ukraine, which it characterizes as a US-led “proxy war” aimed at dismantling Russia.
As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, Russia has staunchly defended North Korea against mounting international pressure. North Korea faces extensive UN and Western sanctions due to its nuclear weapons and missile programmes.
