PYONGYANG: North Korea has expressed its interest in improving relations with Japan, according to a statement issued by Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Kim Yo Jong, who holds the position of vice department director of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK), addressed Japan’s Prime Minister Kishida Fumio’s recent statement regarding the need for bold changes in Japan-North Korea relations.
Kim Yo Jong’s message emphasized the possibility of a new future for the two countries if Japan demonstrates a commitment to “breaking with anachronistic hostility” and approaching bilateral relations with courage and trust. However, she also outlined significant hurdles, particularly Japan’s stance on North Korea’s right to self-defense and the unresolved abduction issue, which she described as stumbling blocks to progress.
Shift in North Korea’s Policy Towards Japan
The statement, issued before Kim Jong Un’s official comment, indicated a potential shift in North Korea’s stance towards Japan. Analysts suggest that recent diplomatic developments, including a condolence message from Kim Jong Un to Prime Minister Kishida regarding the Noto Peninsula earthquake and a message from Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Pak Sang Gil, signify growing interest from North Korea in engaging with Japan.
This apparent change in North Korea’s approach to Japan is seen within the broader context of its diplomatic strategies. While short-term goals may involve strategic separation of Japan, the United States, and South Korea, long-term perspectives suggest an interest in improved relations to prevent obstruction from hardline factions within Japan.
The statement from Kim Yo Jong follows a series of diplomatic overtures from North Korea, indicating a potential shift towards dialogue and engagement. As the region navigates geopolitical dynamics, including the possibility of renewed negotiations between the United States and North Korea, the evolution of Japan-North Korea relations could play a significant role in shaping future developments.
