SEOUL: A North Korean delegation is visiting Beijing for dialogue on strengthening cooperation, North Korean official media reported on Saturday. The development comes as North Korea slowly opens its borders and resumes trade ties with its neighbours following the COVID-19 pandemic.

As per KCNA North Korea’s Vice Foreign Minister Pak Myong Ho and counterpart Sun Weidong held talks to boosting bilateral relations and strategic cooperation.

References to North Korean top officials going to Beijing to discuss affairs publicly has been infrequent since January 2020, when North Korean side closed its borders to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

Earlier, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s visited Russai and held meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in September. As per media reports, the two sides discussed bilateral ties and cooperation during the meeting. Kim’s trip to Russia, had focused deeply on defense cooperation, AFP reported.  Kim’s first official trip abroad since the Covid-19 epidemic has sparked concerns that Russia and North Korea will challenge Western sanctions to secure a weapons agreement.
