SEOUL: North Korea has denounced a new US strategy on countering arms of mass destruction for describing the isolated nation as among those it contemplates a “persistent threat,” Reuters reported on Wednesday.

In a statement, a spokesperson of the North Korean Defence Ministry alleged Washington of increasing nuclear threats, citing a joint military exercise with Seoul and sending a strategic nuclear submarine.

It also denounced the U.S. army’s September 28 statement for its descriptions of Beijing as the “pacing challenge” and Moscow as an “acute threat”. North Korea termed it a “political provocation” against independent and sovereign nations.

The US said several countries including North Korea and violent extremist groups remain persistent threats as they continue to further pursue WMD abilities.

The North Korean army will counter the American military strategy with the “most sustained response strategy,” the spokesperson added.
