SEOUL: North Korea held a ceremony to celebrate the completion of 10,000 new modern homes in the latest built Hwasong District in Pyongyang, state media, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.

Leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, took part in the ceremony, the report said, and a number of most senior government officials, including Kim Tok Hun, premier of the cabinet.

The milestone comes two months after leader Kim Jong broke ground in February on another housing project explained as “another luxurious street of socialism full of the citizen’s happiness” by KCNA.

More apartments in the offing

In 2021, North Korea announced a programme to build 50,000 of the latest apartments in the capital over five years.

Since then, North Korea said it had moved forward with the series of construction projects, a few of which are still ongoing amid foreign suspicion of food shortages.

Leader Kim said the housing project is a long-cherished plan being pushed forward as the “top priority” by the Workers’ Party of Korea and the state. He reaffirmed his idea to make Pyongyang a “globe-famous” city, according to KCNA.
