SEOUL: North Korea’s nuclear programme is a self-defensive step to head off a nuclear war in the face of Washington’s pursuit of “nuclear supremacy,” official media KCNA reported on Tuesday.

Kim Kwang Myong, at the Foreign Ministry’s Institute for Disarmament and Peace, blamed Washington for fueling regional tension with its nuclear programme and accused it of strategic instability ending global peace.

The remarks come as North Korea has raised panic in the region with regular launches of missiles like intercontinental ballistic missiles that can strike the continental US, Reuters reported.

Kim Kwang Myong singled out the latest findings by the US Strategic Posture Commission calling for improving the country’s nuclear weapons programme in preparation for possible simultaneous wars with China and Russia as yet another “extremely dangerous” sign and a “hegemonic act”.

“The United States (US) the world’s main nuclear arms country and the world’s 1st nuclear user which adopted the preventive nuclear assault on other countries as its national policy, is talking about ‘nuclear threat’ from someone. This is a deception,” Kim remarked.

He further said the US was seeking to enhance its preemptive nuclear strike skill against North Korea by making a missile defence system, while also sending strategic assets and “ultra-modern defense hardware” to its partners in the region.
