SEOUL: North Korea on Saturday accused the United States (US) of the collapse of international arms control systems and said the country’s nuclear weapons were only a response to ensure the balance of power in the region.

North Korea’s foreign ministry said in a commentary carried by state news agency KCNA the Korean peninsula is turning out to be the world’s biggest powderkeg and war practice field owing to a military expansion scheme led by the US and its followers.

The ministry said that recent moves by Japan and South Korea showed that a military build-up by the US and its allies was crossing the danger line, and it could not tolerate this.

The comments follow South Korea and the United States announcement on Friday that they plan to hold large-scale military exercises from March 13 to March 23 to further strengthen the allies’ combined defensive system, including focusing on North Korean aggression.

North Korea said that such joint military exercises are evidence that the United States and its allies are hostile and bent on regime change in the country.
