SEOUL: North Korea condemned the United States on Sunday, blaming Washington for a recent attack on the Cuban embassy in Washington, which it deemed a “grave terrorist act.” The North Korean foreign ministry spokesman issued a statement, accusing the US of negligence in ensuring the safety of the Cuban mission and alleged that the attack was a result of “despicable anti-Cuban” intentions harbored by the US.
The incident occurred on September 24 when an assailant targeted the Cuban embassy with two Molotov cocktails. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and there was no significant damage. According to the North Korean spokesman, this incident followed a similar attack in 2020 when someone fired a rifle at the same embassy, indicating a pattern of hostility.
The spokesman asserted that these incidents happened with the tacit connivance of the US administration, emphasizing the need for the US to acknowledge its responsibility for not only the recent attack but also previous terrorist cases. The spokesman criticized the US focus on naming countries as state sponsors of terrorism, urging the US to probe the truth behind these incidents to demonstrate sincerity.
Investigations into Cuban Embassy Attack
The spokesman urged the US to prioritize investigating the incidents rather than concentrating solely on such designations. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan responded, condemning the attack and assuring that US law enforcement authorities would investigate the matter.
The Cuban embassy in Washington reopened in 2015 following the restoration of diplomatic ties between Cuba and the US. Havana has consistently criticized the US for maintaining Cuba on its terrorism list and upholding a Cold War-era economic embargo, considering it unreasonable and unjustified.
