BENGHAZI: The House of Representatives of Libya on Sunday announced the opening of nominations for the presidency of a new government, the local media reported.

Those wishing to contest are invited to submit their nomination papers at HoR headquarters in Benghazi starting on Sunday, until August 11.

House spokesperson Abdullah Balihaq, in an announcement on the council’s official page, said that the Speaker, Aguila Saleh, is asking members and representatives of the Supreme Council of State to recommend capable candidates for the position of prime minister.

He said this call is based on the constitutional declaration, the 13th Constitutional Amendment, election laws issued by the House of Representatives and the decision by the 6+6 Committee.

Abdullah Balihaq said the call is also in line with the agreement made on March 10, 2024, between the president of the Supreme Council of State, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the president of the Presidential Council at the League of Arab States headquarters in Cairo.

He added the invitation also, follows the statement issued by the State Council and the members of the House of Representatives after their meeting in Cairo on July 18.

The UN deputy representative last month said that Libyans from rival regions and all walks of life are fed up with the country’s divisions and want political players to end their years-long impasse and agree to hold national polls.

Stephanie Koury told the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that she had been meeting political leaders, academics, women’s groups, civil society representatives, military leaders and others in the nation’s rival east and west to listen to their views. She stated that there is consensus that the current “status quo is not sustainable” – and the political process required to advance toward polls.
