OSLO: Belarusian, Ukrainian and Russian activists will be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for promoting and protecting the fundamental rights of citizens on Saturday.

The Russian organization Memorial, the Ukrainian Center for Civil Liberties group, and jailed activist Ales Bialiatski of Belarus were announced to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

The prestigious award worth about 900,000 US dollars will be awarded on the death anniversary of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel. It may be recalled that Alfred Nobel founded the Nobel Peace Award in 1985.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said that the recipients of the award did outstanding efforts to document human rights abuses and war crimes. It added that they demonstrated the importance of civil society for democracy and peace.

Famous Belarusian rights activist Bialiatski is the fourth laureate to win the award in jail. Bialiatski was jailed in July 2021 following massive protests.

In Stockholm, a separate awards ceremony will be held honoring the winners of the other Nobel prizes in the fields of physics, medicine, chemistry, economics, and literature.
