NEW DELHI: Indian police have arrested more than 100 striking workers and union leaders protesting low wages at a Samsung Electronics plant in India. According to media reports, the development takes place when the workers and their leaders want to organize a march on Monday. Police claimed that they were holding protest without permission.
The detention marks an escalation of a protest by workers and their leaders at a Samsung home appliance plant near Chennai city in Tamil Nadu. Workers and their leaders demand higher wages and have boycotted work for 7 days, disrupting the company production that contributes roughly a third of Samsung’s annual India income of $12 billion.
Reuters news agency cited a police official as saying that about 100 workers and their leaders were arrested by the police. The official did not provide more information over the matter.
