WASHINGTON: The White House said on Monday that there were no plans for US evacuation from crisis-hit Sudan at the moment.

The Biden led administration’s national security spokesperson John Kirby said, however, the US should treat the situation in Sudan with highest seriousness. The spokesperson said that all US officials in the African country were accounted for and that they were shielding in place.

US has Plans for Evacuation from Sudan

His remarks came following sources from the US embassy in Sudan told the media that over 100 bullets from the Rapid Support Forces personnel deliberately targeted one of its vehicles. Fighting between the army and a rival paramilitary group has killed about 200 people and injured 1,800 following three days of crisis.

The United Nations (UN) has called for an immediate truce and global bodies, including the European Union (EU), have expressed deep concern over the current situation in the African country.

Earlier, the European Union’s (EU) envoy to Sudan was attacked in his own house, EU foreign policy head Josep Borell said.

He tweeted, “This constitutes a violation of the Vienna Convention. Security of diplomatic areas and officials is a responsibility of Sudanese officials and an obligation as per international law,”.

EU spokesperson Nabila Massrali told AFP that the envoy was “OK” after the attack.

“The security of the officials is our priority,” she added. “The European Union delegation has not been evacuated and security steps are being assessed”, she further said.
