WASHINGTON: In a UN Security Council meeting focused on maintaining international peace and security, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted deep concerns regarding the nutrition crisis in the Gaza Strip amidst continued Israeli attacks.

Guterres expressed dismay at the devastating link between hunger and conflict, particularly emphasizing the dire situation in Gaza where he stated, “no one has enough to eat.” According to Guterres, four out of five of the 700,000 hungriest people in the world reside in this small territory.

The Secretary-General underscored the severity of climate chaos and food crises as mounting threats to global peace and security, calling for urgent attention to address these pressing issues.

Since October 7, Israeli attacks on Gaza have resulted in significant casualties, with at least 28,473 victims killed and 68,146 injured. Moreover, the prolonged conflict has led to internal displacement, affecting 85% of the population in Gaza. The territory is facing acute shortages of food, clean water, and medicine, exacerbated by the destruction of 60% of its infrastructure, as reported by the UN.
