MUSCAT: A sixth round of nuclear talks between Iran and the US planned for this weekend has been cancelled, mediator Oman said Saturday, after waves of Israeli attacks on Iran.
“The Iran-US talks scheduled to be held in Muscat this Sunday will not now take place,” Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi said in a post on X, adding that “diplomacy and dialogue remain the only pathway to lasting peace”.
Earlier, Foreign Minister of Iran Abbas Araqchi said that the continuation of indirect Iran-US talks amid Israel’s savagery is “unjustifiable.”
In a phone call with Kaja Kallas, European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the Foreign Minister considered the Israeli regime’s aggression to be the result of direct US support, Iranian state news agency IRNA reported.
Araqchi added that “continuing negotiations between Iran and the US in a situation where the Zionist regime’s savagery continues is unjustifiable.”
He called for a responsible stance from the European Union and the permanent members of the Security Council in condemning the Israeli aggression and holding the aggressor regime accountable.
He added that the recent anti-Iran resolution by the IAEA was an excuse and a basis for Israel’s hostile actions against Iran.
The EU’s foreign policy chief expressed deep regret and concern over the escalating tensions in the region. She emphasised the EU’s readiness to support diplomatic initiatives within the UN Security Council and other international forums aimed at de-escalating the situation and restoring peace and stability.
Earlier on June 10, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei, said Iran and the United States will hold the new round of talks in Muscat on June 15, with Oman as the mediator.
Iran and the United States have held five rounds of talks mediated by Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Al-Busaidi, three in Muscat and two in Rome.
It is pertinent to mention that United States (US) President Donald Trump has said that “Iran must make a deal, before there is nothing left”.
