ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Ministry of Energy (Power Division) on Sunday dismissed media reports regarding the provision of free electricity to parliamentarians and bureaucrats.

A Spokesperson Ministry of Power Division in a statement said that no free electricity was provided to the bureaucrats and parliamentarians. He said also, no free electricity was being supplied to any government institutions.

A countrywide campaign against the independent power producers (IPPs) agreements prompted the government to adopt an emergency plan.

A day earlier, it was reported that the Energy Ministry proposed to stop free electricity for government and semi-government institutions in the first phase.  It has also been suggested to end free petrol for government officials in the next phase.

It is pertinent to mention that a discussion on expensive power purchase agreements with IPPs has been going on across the country for the past couple of weeks.

Because of the worst agreements, the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are receiving capacity payments, which are entirely borne by the poor citizens of Pakistan.
