WASHINGTON: The United States has said that it does not want to engage in conflict with Iran, but it remains committed to protecting its troops in the Middle East and support Israel.
Lloyd Austin, US Secretary of Defense, said that the United States strongly condemned Iran and its proxies for their “reckless and unprecedented attack on Israel.”
He called for an immediate cessation of further aggressive actions, underlining that while the U.S. does not seek conflict with Iran, it will act decisively to safeguard its forces and support Israel’s defense.
Praising the US military’s response, the Pentagon commander highlighted their role in thwarting Iran’s significant assault on Israel. On April 13, the U.S. intercepted numerous missiles and drones launched from Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen bound for Israel.
“Our forces remain vigilant to protect US troops and regional partners, bolster Israel’s defense capabilities, and promote stability in the region,” Austin affirmed.
Following the attack, President Joe Biden assured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the US would not endorse any unilateral action by Israel against Iran. Biden promptly convened his security team for deliberations and engaged in discussions with Netanyahu.
In response to the escalating tensions, President Biden announced plans to convene an emergency meeting of the Group of Seven leaders on April 14 to coordinate a united diplomatic response to Iran’s aggression.
