SAN SALVADOR: At least nine people were killed in a stampede that occurred on Saturday at a stadium in El Salvador where football enthusiasts had congregated to watch a local tournament.
The National Civil Police said on Twitter that nine people have died as a result of the stampede at the Cuscatlan Stadium.
The security organisation reportedly said that “several” injured individuals, including at least two who were in severe condition, were transported to local hospitals, according to AFP.
According to preliminary reports, a crowd of spectators attempted to cram into the stadium in San Salvador, the nation’s capital, to attend the match between the clubs Alianza and FAS.
Juan Carlos Bidegain, El Salvador’s interior minister, said that the first responders from the civil protection agency were on the site and helping those who had been harmed by the event.
Hundreds of police officers and troops arrived in the stadium as ambulance sirens sounded, and the game was put on hold as emergency staff evacuated spectators.
In the wake of the stampede, the nation’s hospital network, according to Health Minister Francisco Alabi, is “providing medical care to all patients.”
Seven months ago, a stampede that occurred during a football game in Malang, Indonesia, claimed the lives of 135 people, including more than 40 children.
