ISLAMABAD: National Institute of Health (NIH) has increased its stock of anti-venom to tackle the growing risk of snakebite envenomation during the monsoon season.

In a video advisory issued by NIH for public awareness about the snake bites treatment, NIH warns that in flood-affected areas and those receiving many rainfalls, there are high risks of an increase in snake bites incidents.

The video message said that snakebite is a big, but often neglected health problem affecting millions of people in developing nations.

Snakebite a Neglected Tropical Disease

World Health Organization (WHO) has declared snake bite a neglected tropical illness which is affecting nearly 30,000 people in Pakistan on an annual basis.

The major reason behind death due to snake bites is a lack of awareness in the public who instead of forthwith rushing the affected person to the hospital, prefer the traditional way of treatment.

Apart from the video message, NIH also prepared a pictorial display to educate people about better treatment of snake bite victims.
