ISLAMABAD: Iran said Sunday a defense ministry site in Isfahan province had been targeted in a night-time drone attack. This coincides with boiling tensions with the West over its nuclear program and its role in Russia’s war in Ukraine.

According to a statement by Iran’s defense ministry, one drone was destroyed by an anti-aircraft system while two others exploded. It further said the site suffered minor damage and there were no casualties.

Video footage showed a fireball lighting up the night sky with people running and vehicles of emergency services speeding to the site of the attack. The footage was widely shared on social media and published on Iran’s state media.

Drone attack targeted an Iran defense ministry workshop complex

The state news agency IRNA quoting the ministry termed the incident as an unsuccessful attack that targeted a workshop complex of the ministry of defense. The complex’s operations were not affected by the strike, which took place around 2000 GMT.

Authorities did not reveal more regarding the activities at the site, however, IRNA mentioned that the strike had targeted a plant that manufactured ammunition.

Since September, the Iranian regime has been facing protests over the death in custody of Kurdish-Iranian woman Mahsa Amini.
