ABUJA: Nigeria’s two main opposition parties Tuesday called for the cancellation of the presidential elections held on the weekend as they alleged manipulation of results and demanded fresh voting.
Chairman Labour Party Julius Abure, who representatives of the Peoples Democratic Party flanked, said that the election was totally compromised and the opposition parties have lost faith in the entire electoral process.
Early counting from Saturday’s election shows the incumbent All Progressives Congress party candidate Bola Tinubu ahead of PDP’s Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of the Labour Party.
Balloting was mostly peaceful, but many polling stations opened too late, and delays and technical issues disrupted tallies uploaded from local polling stations to a central website.
Independent National Electoral Commission, the country’s election overseer, said issues were technical glitches.
Opposition points system’s failure
But opposition insists failures in the system allowed for disparities and manipulation in the results.
Abure said that the election was not free and far from being transparent.
